Friedreich Ataxia (FA)

One of our biggest inspirations for starting Yindyamarra Care is our brother Shane.

Our brother and mate, Shane.

Shane had Friedreich’s Ataxia. Friedreich Ataxia (FA) is an inherited genetic condition that causes progressive damage to the nervous system resulting in symptoms which include muscle weakness, loss of balance and coordination (ataxia), speech problems and heart disease.

Friedreich Ataxia is the most common form of hereditary ataxia, affecting about 1 in 30,000 people in Australia and New Zealand. Friedreich Ataxia is also referred to as Friedreich’s ataxia and abbreviated to FA or FRDA.

Due to Shane having this disorder it was a progressive, neurodegenerative movement disorder which left him wheelchair bound and ultimately taking his life. Shane inspired us with his own desire and determination to live life to the fullest and to over come any challenges that he faced.

This has driven our passion to want to be able to support our NDIS participants with the same care and dignity we would of expected for our brother. Shane was an incredible advocate and mentor for people living with a disability. He was a public speaker for many organisations.

We now have the privilege to keep Shane’s legacy for disability advocacy continuing in his honor through us at Yindyamarra Care.

We pride ourselves on providing the best possible supports tailored to each participants personal needs and goals to help them live a happy and harmonious life!
